Exposure Effects Of Carbon Dioxide Gas

Carbon Dioxide is generally regarded as an asphyxiant, in that it displaces Oxygen.

The signs and symptoms of asphyxia are headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, muscular weakness, drowsiness, and ringing in the ears. Levels of 10%-12% carbon dioxide can cause unconsciousness within a very short period of time.

Because Carbon Dioxide is heavier than air, (and large leaks will settle initially in low lying areas) anyone working in sub-surface or confined areas should be very alert to any presence of elevated levels of CO2. Anyone who has been overcome due to exposure to carbon dioxide gas should be removed from the contaminated area immediately, inhale fresh air or oxygen and seek medical attention. If breathing has stopped, start artificial respiration at once.
